Light it, shade it, furnish it
Everything that turns a yard into the place everyone ends up on a summer night.
A builder's notes before you buy
Keep high voltage away from the water
Plug-in 120V lights and cords belong well back from the pool edge. For anything strung over or near the water, choose low-voltage (12–24V) or solar.
Pick materials that handle splashes
Chlorinated water and Kansas sun are hard on painted wood and cheap fabric. HDPE resin, powder-coated aluminum and removable cushions last longer poolside.
Respect the wind
Big umbrellas and shade sails catch a lot of air. Use the full base weight, anchor sails to solid posts, and close umbrellas when the wind picks up.
Four decades on the pool deck
I've been building inground swimming pools around Wichita for 40 years. I've seen what holds up to chlorine, Kansas wind and summer sun, and what ends up in the trash after one season. Backyard & Beyond is where I share the products I'd actually put around a pool.
